Today I wore another one of my favorite the Stockplace sweaters, and I love it as well! The fun bows on the sleeve add some interest, but the color of the sweater keeps it minimal. So, basically, it has all the components of my ideal piece of clothing! I didn't love, though, the light wash jeans with the taupe color; it just doesn't look great to me. Next time I'll have to try this sweater with my trusty dark-wash Madewells!
I've been continuing to think about what I wrote about in my last post, Ushers of Life, and how that pertains to fashion as a whole. Fashion is definitely one of my passions, so you might think my musings are a bit extreme, but hopefully you’ll agree! So here we go.
Expression through clothing is so amazing to me because it simultaneously unites and individualizes us. We (obviously) all wear clothes, but we take special care to personalize our outfits to feel like us, right down to the perfect nail colors and most flattering styles of denim. This freedom of expression is a gift, and has the ability to help empower us to walk in the truth of our identity. This is not to say that fashion and style choices dictate our inherent identities, because only God can do that. But, I do think that our clothing can help us feel confident, beautiful, and joyful, all of which are parts of our identity in Christ.
How fun is it that God gives us so many avenues for creative expression? Not only is there the every day creativity of fashion, there’s also photography, painting, dancing, crafting, and honestly who knows what else. It’s simply fabulous! So many ways to honor God with our talents and creativity. But I digress.
Since fashion is intellectually a bit more abstract, it can be more difficult to honor God in than a painting of a lion and a lamb side by side. Frankly, I’m still muddling through how exactly to honor God in fashion, but as a starting place for all of us, I think it all goes back to identity. If we’re embracing ourselves, our femininity, and tapping in to who we are in Christ, I believe we might be honoring God simply because we’re demonstrating what it looks like to walk in the confidence, love, and joy that can only come from him. Fashion is just a way to refine what we believe about how beautifully God made us in a more tangible way.
I don’t know about you, but that gets me so hype! The lies that our broken world constantly tell us about fashion say that it is shallow, or even lame. But the truth is that we’re learning to express and define our true feminine (or masculine - the other great thing about fashion is that it's for everybody) identities in Christ. Woohoo! I’d love to know your thoughts on this topic too, cause I’m definitely still learning!
I pray that each one of you is able to see the truths of beauty that God spoke into you as he shaped you, and that you begin to fully understand that God never makes something that is not at the very peak of beauty. To those of you doubting, read carefully... I promise that you are included. Embrace the knowledge that God created you to the most beautiful version of you possible, and he is joyful at your very existence. So rock it! You are fearfully and wonderfully made by the almighty God himself. Basically, you’re pretty stinkin’ cool. I want nothing more than for than for you to believe it.
